- Orson
- Orson mEnglish: from an Old Norman French nickname meaning ‘bear-cub’ (a diminutive of ors bear, Latin ursus), used occasionally in medieval times, but in modern times probably always a transferred use of the associated surname. In the 20th century it has come to public notice as a result of the fame of the American actor Orson Welles (1915–85), who dropped his more prosaic given name, George, in favour of his middle name before embarking on his acting career.
